Pressure Relief Damper Video
Open pressure testing of a standard Inert Pressure Relief Damper. Designed to retain the gas within the room until the set pressure of 100Pa +/- 10%.
All high pressure fire suppression systems cause large spikes or pulse pressures in sealed rooms. This pressure must be vented to atmosphere to prevent structural damage. In order to meet regulatory obligations, (BS EN 15004-1:2019), a room protected by a fire suppression system requires a form of pressure relief.
Invented and designed by Puma Fire Founder Phillip Newton in 1999, our Pressure Relief Dampers (PRDs), vents and shutters provide the optimal solution. Puma Fire offers inert gas pressure relief dampers shutters, and vents, in 13 standard sizes, as well as 18 for synthetic gases. We cover all types of gases and installations, and also offer bespoke solutions.
Our Pressure Relief Dampers are all fitted with balanced, gravity weighted blades, hinged on stainless steel rods and bronze bearings. The engineering and blade overlap ensures an effective seal to the wall opening, offering minimum leakage. All standard pressure relief dampers are manufactured from Zintec steel and polyester powder coated in RAL 9010 white, although special colours and other materials are available on request.
Contact UsUnique to Puma Fire, each feature an external Self Closing Door (SCD) or “cat flap”, held in place with a magnetic catch. This provides weatherproofing when used on external walls as well as an effective sound barrier, and an air, dust and noise seal. The SCD also creates a thermal barrier (again, on external walls) preventing condensation forming on the FIS blades. It is possible to increase insulation and sound absorption with additional insulation.
Where there is also possible risk of an external explosion, such as in areas where flammable gases or batteries are stores, the SCD can be manufactured from 3mm reinforced stainless steel. This will ensure the delicate equipment within the room is not affected.

Puma Fire offers an extensive range of Pressure Relief Dampers which are certified to the correct BS EN standards (BSEN 1634-1). This means our products have been awarded full classification of BS EN 13501-2, following extensive testing in a full-scale furnace/wall, from both directions. We also hold UKAS accredited free vent area validation to BS EN 1341-1:2012, and closed blade leakage class to BS EN1751:2014. Our solutions cover all gases, sizes and installations. We also provide bespoke solutions.
